Battery passport check
From 18 February 2027, LMT batteries, electric vehicle batteries and industrial batteries above 2 kWh need a battery passport (Art. 77(1) Regulation (EU) 2023/1542). The classification depends on the purpose, construction and weight of the battery. Enter them and you see the category, the result and the provision.

Frequently asked questions
Does an e-bike battery need a battery passport?
Yes, from 18 February 2027 and regardless of capacity. A sealed battery of up to 25 kg that powers a wheeled vehicle is an LMT battery. Vehicles that are toys are excluded.
And a cordless drill?
A sealed power tool battery of up to 5 kg is normally a portable battery and only needs the QR code. Above that it counts as an industrial battery, and the 2 kWh limit decides. The Regulation does not name power tool batteries, so this is our reading of the wording.
How do I work out the 2 kWh?
As a helper calculation, nominal voltage times capacity: 48 V times 50 Ah gives 2.4 kWh. Art. 77 gives no formula, so if in doubt use the value from your test report.
Is the result binding?
No. The check follows the definitions in their order and does not replace a classification in the individual case. For borderline cases, read the guide or ask a competent body.
